高二英语单词:envy、envious、jealousy、jealous

envy、jealousy这两个名词均有“妒忌”“羡慕”之意。今天小牛英语教大家如何区分这两个名词。

 
envy  侧重指因别人获得自己想获得的东西或成就而产生妒忌 (a feeling someone has  when he wishes he could have the same thing or quality that another person has. ) 强调别人有而希望自己也有,这种妒忌不带有贬义。
 
1) Their beautiful garden is the envy of all the neighbours. 
        所有邻居都羡慕他们美丽的花园。

2) When I got the well-paid job in a foreign company, my friends were somewhat green with envy
       当我在一家外企找了份收入丰厚的工作时,我的朋友都有点嫉妒我。

3)He finds it difficult to hide his envy of his brother's success. 
      他很难掩饰对自己兄弟成功的妒忌。

4)Glover thinks that Smith did him down, perhaps out of envy
      格洛弗认为史密斯说他坏话,也许是出于嫉妒。
 
●  envy 也可用作动词
 
1)I have always envied your good luck.
      我一直羡慕你运气好。

2)I envy her ability to talk to people she's never met before.
      她与人初次见面就能侃侃而谈,这真让我羡慕。

3)Beggars do not envy millionaires, though of course they will envy other’ beggars who are more successful.    —Betrand Russell, British philosopher

jealousy 侧重指对别人占有的东西恼恨不满 (a feeling of anger or bitterness which someone has when he finds that another perons has the qualities or possession that hasn’t.)强调妒忌憎恨别人有而自己没有,这种妒忌通常带有贬义。
 
 1)Maybe there is jealousy, but I think the envy is more powerful.  
      也许是羡慕,但我认为更多的是嫉妒。

2)They were divided by mutual suspicion and jealousies.
      她俩因为相互猜疑嫉妒而不和。

3)She was consumed by jealousy when she heard that he has been given a promotion.
      当听说他被提升了,她妒忌得要命。

4)The team has performed very badly this season due to petty jealousies among the players.
       因球员间为小事相互妒忌,这支球队本赛季表现很糟。
 
envious、jealous这两个形容词都有“嫉妒的”、“羡慕的”的意思。用法同其名词,两词后 都可接介词of。
 
1)She threw envious glances at her sister's dress. 
       她以羡慕的眼光看了几下她姐姐的那套衣服。

2)Some girl students are envious of Mary's slim figure very much.    
       有些女生非常羡慕玛丽的苗条身材。

3)I remember that we were all very envious of your good performances in your study at middle school.
       我记得在中学的时候我们都很羡慕你学习的优良成绩。

4)Envious of his friend’s success, he resorted to some means to humiliate his  reputation behind his back.
       嫉妒他的朋友的成功,他采取一些手段在背后诋毁他的声誉。
 
1)He had always been very jealous of his brother's good looks.
      他总是很妒忌他哥哥帅气的长相。

2)She was so jealous that she wouldn’t let her husband to dance with any young pretty girl.
      她个性十足,不愿让的自己的丈夫与任何年轻漂亮的女孩跳舞。

3)The director was much keener to Helen than he was to the others, which, of  course, made them jealous.
      总经理对海伦比别的女孩都好,这当然让她们很嫉妒。

4)He was hounded out of his job by jealous rivals.
      他受到忌妒他的竞争者的算计而被迫离职。
